Born This Way!

So, in taking this Communications and Technology course at good old Camosun College, the first thing that came to mind when I tried to think of something that I thought was related to the course was the FCK H8 website and youtube videos.

Let me explain..

1: I think they are getting the facts out about a very serious issue (homophobia) to a larger audience by using humour and sarcasm in a series of videos that are both on youtube and their website: http://fckh8.com/

2: Every time you like or share a video on facebook or twitter, a donation is made for whatever campaign that the video is associated with, for example the born this way video gives a 10 cent donation to the “Born This Way” Campaign 4 Queer Kids.

Am I the only one who finds this concept completely awesome? Just click a button and you’re not only spreading the message, you’re contributing to the campaign!

P.S. : If I have to edit this one more time I might jump off a cliff, and … FCK H8! 😀

Fuck Yeah! Straight against h8 … or something!
Not entirely sure about having a child finger the camera and tell people to suck it, but the videos are a great way to raise awareness. No one ‘chooses’ their sexual orientation. Love is Love.

Thanks for creating this blog and sharing this information!

To follow up, obviously the ability to do this is based on the way we can now communicate via technology. Organizations can raise awareness, and raise funds, at the same time. When you say you find this concept “awesome”, were you referring to one of these, both of these, or were these conflated in your mind as one thing? If so, it’s interesting to see these concepts intertwined, I think. Why do we think this way?

    • They are definitely two things in my mind. Raising awareness with social media has been an interesting concept to watch in the last few years, especially in terms of our election campaign recently and seeing the NDP so involved in social media to gain support. With the FCK H8 videos, it was the first time I saw this combined with also making a donation to a cause, and not just spreading the word (which is the main point, in my mind, and perhaps the most important? It’s certainly hard to gauge that one).. however, I see combining the two with the possibility of having a multiplier effect on gaining support for a cause that I (obviously!) believe in. The dynamics of which are, as you say, interesting and intertwined and certainly something intriguing in terms of how technology has allowed us to do this!
